Royal Wedding Celebration

On November 18, 2023, Jovia Mutesi and William Gabula IV celebrated their official wedding. This happened at Christ Cathedral Bugembe in Jinja City, following a traditional ceremony at her ancestral home in Mayuge Town Council, Mayuge district. The event was attended by thousands, with Vice President Jessica Alupo representing President Yoweri Museveni.

Distinguished guests included Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and various dignitaries from Uganda and beyond. Notable international guests included Prince Sicalo of Swaziland, Nabagereka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda, Tooro queen mother Best Kemigisha, and the Omugo of Bunyoro.

This union marked a significant historical moment for the Busoga Kingdom. The kingdom had been without a queen for over 50 years. The wedding symbolized a celebration of cultural and developmental strides made by the Busoga Kingdom. The region has mainly developed in areas such as living standards, education, health, agriculture, tourism, and environmental sustainability.

Jovia Mutesi, born in the Mayuge district, is a dedicated Christian, philanthropist, and active member of the Anglican Church of Uganda. She advocates for women’s and children’s causes. She also serves as the patron of the Mutesi Foundation, empowering women and girls through education and economic opportunities.

Where does Jovia Mutesi come from?

Jovia hails from the Mayuge district in the Busoga region. She is the daughter of Stanley Bayoole, a civil servant and politician. Her mother is Florence Bayoole, a homemaker and farmer. Her educational journey includes excelling at St. Mary’s College Namagunga. Jovia then obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Pretoria.

Jovia’s legal career includes roles at the Uganda Human Rights Commission and Katende, Ssempebwa & Company Advocates. In 2021, she transitioned to her royal duties as the Inhebantu of Busoga, overseeing welfare programs and chairing the Busoga Women’s Council.
