What you need to know about Joel Ssenyonyi

Biography, Age, and Early Life

Joel Ssenyonyi, a prominent Ugandan politician, and former journalist, was born on December 20, 1986, at Mulago Hospital to Mr Joseph Basekezi and Mrs Dorothy Nankunda. Hailing from Nakasongola, Ssenyonyi is a Muruuli by culture who spent his formative years in Kyengera, a suburb of Kampala. As the firstborn in a family of four, Ssenyonyi’s upbringing was marked by challenges and resilience.

Despite the complexities of his family structure—his father having multiple wives and children—Ssenyonyi’s mother played a pivotal role in bringing the family together. After their parents’ divorce, Ssenyonyi, his mother, three siblings, and a maid relocated to a one-roomed house, facing financial difficulties. He recalls the struggles, stating, “I remember my mother going without food some nights so we (children) could eat the little that was there.”

Joel Ssenyonyi’s Educational and Career Journey

Ssenyonyi’s journey into journalism began during his S.6 vacation when he responded to a Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) news anchor advert. Despite lacking formal qualifications, he impressed the interviewers and secured a position, marking the start of his journalism career at the age of 19.

While working, Ssenyonyi pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Statistics at Makerere University, showcasing his commitment to both his education and career. After five years as a news anchor and talk show host at NTV Uganda, Ssenyonyi left the journalism scene in May 2019.

How did Joel Ssenyonyi Transition to Politics?

Shortly after leaving NTV, Ssenyonyi made a surprising return to the public sphere, this time as the People Power spokesperson. His appointment, announced by People Power leader and Kyadondo East legislator Bobi Wine, highlighted Ssenyonyi’s intelligence, professionalism, and commitment to social justice.

In a statement, Bobi Wine praised Ssenyonyi, saying, “Joel Ssenyonyi is an intelligent young Ugandan, accomplished professional, and devoted patriot.” Ssenyonyi’s decision to join politics was fueled by a desire to contribute to his country’s well-being in a different capacity.

What are his personal Life Beliefs?

Ssenyonyi, a devout Born Again Christian, attends Watoto Church in Ntinda and Watoto Central in Kampala. He emphasizes his commitment to his faith and revealed his decision to remain celibate until marriage. In 2017, he publicly declared his virginity at Watoto Church, stating, “I’m a virgin… just because they work doesn’t mean I go all over putting them in every place.”

What are Joel Ssenyonyi’s Hobbies and Interests?

Known for his love of technology, Ssenyonyi is attached to his phone, where he reads the Bible and coordinates People Power activities. Described as a metrosexual, he takes pride in his appearance, fashion sense, and grooming. Ssenyonyi is also a sports enthusiast, balancing his busy schedule with activities that keep him physically active.

Entertainment and Preferences

Beyond his political and religious commitments, Ssenyonyi enjoys Irene Namubiru’s music, especially “Maama Nabulo.” He has a keen interest in reading and following international news, with a preference for sources like Al Jazeera and CNN.

Congrats on having a new baby!
