When did the incident happen?
The Nairobi gas blast occurred on February 1, 2024, at around 23:30 hours in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, specifically in Embakasi, proving to be a nightmare. A truck transporting gas cylinders exploded, resulting in significant fires during the night. The incident claimed the lives of three people on the spot and injured at least 300 individuals around the scene. The rolling fires caused extensive damage to properties, residences, businesses, and vehicles. Fireballs ignited the nearby textile and garment company. Reports indicate that nothing remained in the depot except ashes and the truck’s metal; everything was burnt down.
Among the 300 injured individuals, at least 25 were children. The medical sector swiftly responded to the scene, providing immediate attention to those with minor injuries who were then sent home. Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, mentioned ongoing search efforts to check for any other bodies in the burnt houses.

What was the cause of the gas blast?
The investigation into the gas explosion is ongoing, mainly due to the cylinders being in the truck. The Kenyan Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) issued a statement indicating that the company involved was illegal. The authority disclosed that it had rejected over two requests from the company to construct storage facilities at the site of operation.
