Professionalization and Human Capital Development in the Banking and Financial Services Industry

The Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Graduation Ceremony on June 27, 2024, at the Mestil Hotel Kampala.

The Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS), formerly The Uganda Institute of Bankers, is the leading provider of training for Uganda’s financial sector. Established in 1967 as a local center of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London, UIBFS gained autonomy in 1990 and continues to drive excellence in financial services education. The Institute, a Body Corporate registered under the Companies Act of Uganda, is headquartered at Plot 10 Buganda Road, Kampala.

The event was a significant milestone, celebrating the achievements of students and highlighting the Institute’s contributions to the banking and financial services sector in Uganda.

Under the theme “Data Culture as a driver to Professionalization and Human Capital Development in the Banking and Financial Services Industry” the AGM and Graduation event highlighted the institute’s efforts to increase human capital efficiency in the banking sector through use of technology.

Shaping The Financial Future

During the graduation event, the CEO, Mrs. Masadde Goretti opened the ceremony with a warm welcome to all attendees, including the guest of honor, board members, students, and industry partners. She emphasized the importance of the Institute’s role in shaping the future of the financial sector through innovative training and development programs.

“UIBFS is committed to providing market-led training, research, and consultancy to providers and users of financial services. Our mission is to promote professionalism and inclusion within the financial sector, and we are proud of the progress we have made. Today, we celebrate the achievements of our graduates who are set to make significant contributions to the industry,” Mrs. Masadde stated.

The graduation ceremony honored the achievements of 290 students who successfully completed various programs, including : Certified Credit Management, Chartered Banker Level 1, Diploma in Microfinance, Microfinance Apprenticeship Program, Foundational Certificate in Banking and Financial Services, Compliance Certificate, Risk Management Certificate, Bank Branch Management, Trade Finance Certificate, ACI Certificate.

Highly Performing Students Recognised

The institute recognized its highly performing students in each course as enlisted below :

1. Otabongo David- Certified Credit Management

2. Kangume Racheal – Chartered Banker Level 1

3. Naluyinda Brenda- Microfinance apprenticeship Program

4. Mukiibi Andrew – Diploma in Microfinance

5. Muhwezi Dues- Foundational Certificate in Banking and Financial Services

6. Kayobyo Esther Patience- Compliance Certificate

7. Nakimuli Olive- Risk Management Certificate

8. Atukwase Stephen- Trade Finance Certificate

9. Kaitesti Amanda – ACI Certificate

The Board Chair, Mr. Michael K. Mugabi ED- Housing Finance Bank, also graced occasion and invited the council president Mr. Fabian Kasi, MD Centenary Bank to give his remarks during the event. Mr. Fabian Kasi,the Council President congratulated the graduates and also welcomed Mr. Henry Kyanjo and Mr. Edgar Byamah to the Council.

He also spoke about the key activities that the Institute has been focusing on and will continue to exercise in the forthcoming year. These include the creation of a project-based training approach and developing a competency framework.

“We are also in the process of statutory recognition journey and the draft bill to ensure that all bankers meet set requirements and standards to practice banking at different levels including types and level of training and increase in membership and training hence institute ability to invest and become a center of excellence and achieve financial sustainability” he stated. He also highlighted the Institute’s plan to re-brand to improve its brand appeal and visibility in the market.

During the event , Mr. Ralph Bakashabaruhanga -Director Human Resources at BOU, representing the patron, Dr. Michael Atingi- Ego, Governor of BOU also commended the Institute’s efforts in fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. “It is worth noting that the Institute continues to contribute to the growth and expansion of Uganda’s banking and financial industries by upskilling human resources. By upgrading your course structures and content to meet industry demands, you will remain at the forefront of Uganda’s economic development,” he said.

The AGM and Graduation Ceremony underscored the Institute’s commitment to excellence and its pivotal role in the development of Uganda’s financial services sector. UIBFS continues to forge strong partnerships with local, regional, and international institutions, enhancing its capacity to provide cutting-edge training and research.
