The Ankole Carnival, a grand annual event, has grown to become the biggest street party in Western Uganda, celebrated for its vibrant cultural displays, entertainment, and tourism promotion. Organized by Medotex Americana, the carnival is designed not only as a celebration of Ankole culture but also as a tool for promoting tourism and boosting the regional economy. Set to take place on 30th August 2024, this year’s edition promises to be an unforgettable experience, themed “Season of Sweetness.”

Historical Significance and Growth

Launched as a way to unify different tribes and promote the rich culture of Ankole, the carnival has gained prominence over the years. It attracts people from across Uganda, drawing tourists to the scenic beauty of Western Uganda. Mbarara, the cultural hub of the Ankole kingdom, often plays host to the event, with this year’s edition taking place at Kyamate Stadium in Ntungamo.

Themed “Season of Sweetness”

The 2024 carnival’s theme, “Season of Sweetness,” is meant to symbolize the warmth, hospitality, and cultural richness of the Ankole people. From sweet melodies, traditional performances, and mouthwatering delicacies to vibrant street parades, the carnival promises an enriching experience for attendees.

  1. Tree Lighting Ceremony
    • The carnival kicks off with the symbolic tree lighting ceremony, signifying a bright start to the festivities. This is a moment for the community to come together in unity, with the lit tree standing as a beacon of celebration.

  6. Miss Ankole Beauty Pageant
    • The Miss Ankole Beauty Pageant is a celebration of beauty and culture. Contestants will compete not only in terms of physical beauty but also in demonstrating their knowledge of Ankole traditions, customs, and values. The winner embodies both elegance and the spirit of the Ankole kingdom.
  7. Wonder on Wheels
    • This event is a showcase of innovative, customized vehicles and stunt performances. Attendees can expect to be wowed by daring stunts and creatively designed vehicles that add an exciting edge to the carnival experience.
  8. Band of the Year
    • The Band of the Year competition will pit some of the best marching bands against each other, competing for the title of the best in Ankole. The music, rhythm, and synchronization of these bands are sure to captivate audiences.
  9. The Green Carnival
