For the second time this year, the Government of Uganda has decided to shelve the new A-Level Curriculum. The first time news about cancelling the new A-Level Curriculum surfaced was in February 2024. This was followed by an announcement in September 2024, with a renewed commitment to ensure the curriculum would be in place by 2025.

However, by Friday, November 15, 2024, the Daily Monitor reported that the government had once again decided to drop the implementation of the new A-Level Curriculum. The obvious question on everyone’s lips is: what’s next for the current Senior Fours who are hoping to join Senior Five in 2025?

What Next for the New A-Level Curriculum?

It is important to note that the competency-based curriculum used by the current Senior Fours in lower secondary is entirely different from the structure of the current A-Level Curriculum, both in terms of content delivery and assessment. This means there is no realistic possibility that the current Senior Fours, upon joining Senior Five, will use the old curriculum while waiting for the new one to be implemented.

To address this, sources at the Ministry of Education report that a review of all A-Level subjects is underway to develop an abridged A-Level Curriculum. This has left many wondering how such an initiative will turn out. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this approach will work, or is it yet another gamble into uncertainty?
