The boda boda industry has grown to become the country’s second-largest employer, according to Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi. Speaking at the launch of the United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union at Serena Hotel on January 21, Magyezi highlighted the sector’s significance, noting that it employs over 1.4 million riders nationwide.

“The bodaboda industry operates in every sub-county across Uganda and has become the second-highest employer after agriculture,” Magyezi said. He emphasized the industry’s impact on lowering transportation costs across the country.

However, the sector’s rapid growth has not come without challenges. Magyezi expressed concern over the lack of organization within the bodaboda community, attributing this to rising crime rates and frequent accidents involving motorcycles.

“Of the 228,000 crimes reported last year, 15% were connected to motorcycle use, with at least 10 motorcycles stolen daily,” he said. He added that the absence of proper organization has made it difficult for the government to effectively engage with bodaboda riders.

What is the New Boda boda Union and Mobile App in Uganda?

The launch of the United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union marks a significant step toward addressing these challenges. Union chairperson Frank Mawejje announced the development of a mobile application designed to connect riders with customers more efficiently. This new app should not be confused with Safe Boda as they are completely different from each other.

“All union riders will register on our mobile application, which requires a weekly fee of UGX 5,000. Customers will use the app to find nearby riders,” Mawejje explained. He added that the app aims to reduce crime by keeping a record of both riders and customers.

The union also hopes to foster professionalism and accountability among riders, offering a structured system that benefits both cyclists and passengers.

Road Safety Concerns

Traffic Police spokesperson Micheal Kananura underscored the importance of road safety in the bodaboda industry. With motorcycles serving as the primary means of transport for many Ugandans, he called for increased responsibility among riders.

“Seven out of 10 people who die daily on our roads are bodaboda riders,” Kananura noted. He welcomed the establishment of the union as a step toward creating a more organized and safer transport system.

Kananura urged riders to prioritize safety measures such as wearing helmets. “As you are on the road, always remember that your safety is paramount,” he said.

What is the purpose of the United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union?

The United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union is expected to address long-standing issues in the industry by promoting organization, reducing crime, and enhancing road safety. With the government and stakeholders collaborating closely, the bodaboda sector could continue to thrive while mitigating its associated risks.

As Uganda’s second-largest employer, the bodaboda industry has immense potential to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development if adequately regulated and supported.
