Why did Uganda Police ban the 2025 concert organized by King Saha?

The Uganda Police Force has announced the cancellation of a highly anticipated music concert by renowned musician Manisul Ssemanda, popularly known as King Saha. The event, organized by Benon Galabuzi under Umoja Management, was scheduled for 24th January 2025, Friday at the Cricket Oval Lugogo, Kampala.

In a statement released Thursday evening, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the abrupt cancellation. “The decision to halt the event is based on recommendations from the joint security and national security technical team, which identified potential structural failures at the facility, posing a threat to public safety,” Mr. Rusoke explained.

He further emphasized that the concert would remain suspended until necessary rectifications are made to ensure the safety of attendees. However, the announcement has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning whether safety concerns were the real motivation behind the move.

How have people reacted to the cancellation of the King Saha concert?

The cancellation has fueled speculation, especially given King Saha’s well-known political affiliations. Saha is a staunch supporter of Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a prominent figure in Uganda’s opposition. Kyagulanyi, who contested against President Museveni in the 2021 general elections, has faced significant restrictions on his music career, including a ban on holding concerts.

In recent weeks, King Saha has been actively seen alongside Bobi Wine, participating in NUP mobilization activities. Bobi Wine himself had publicly confirmed his attendance at the concert and even reserved a table for the event, further intertwining the concert with political overtones.

Social Media Reactions

The police decision has sparked outrage on social media, with critics suggesting that the move was politically motivated rather than a genuine concern for public safety. Many commentators argue that the cancellation reflects a broader trend of targeting artists and events associated with opposition figures.

One Twitter user remarked, “This isn’t about safety; it’s about silencing voices of dissent. King Saha is being punished for standing with Bobi Wine.”

Another added, “How come other events at similar venues go ahead without any safety concerns? The timing of this cancellation is too convenient.”

Which other concerts were cancelled before the King Saha 2025 concert?

The cancellation of King Saha’s concert adds to a growing list of restrictions imposed on artists affiliated with Uganda’s opposition. Bobi Wine himself faced similar challenges when he transitioned from music to politics. Despite his popularity, he has been repeatedly blocked from performing, with authorities often citing security concerns.

For King Saha, the cancellation not only disrupts his music career but also highlights the challenges faced by artists who align themselves with Uganda’s opposition. As fans express disappointment and frustration, the incident raises broader questions about freedom of expression and political tolerance in the country.

While authorities maintain that the decision was made purely in the interest of public safety, the broader implications of the move are hard to ignore. For now, King Saha’s fans will have to wait for clarity on whether the concert will be rescheduled or permanently shelved.
