Ugandan authorities announced on 26th February 2025, that one of Joseph Kony’s wives, Ruth Achan, along with three of their children Maisa Amu, Betty Akidi, and Pope Kony were repatriated from the Central African Republic. They were received by Kenneth Omona, the State Minister for Northern Uganda, after being airlifted back to the country. This marks a significant moment as Kony himself remains at large, believed to be hiding in a remote area of Central Africa.

Have Members of Joseph Kony’s Family Previously Returned to Uganda?

This isn’t the first instance of Kony’s family members returning. In July 2023, 18 former members of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), along with their families, were also repatriated to Uganda after surrendering to forces in the Central African Republic. They arrived at Entebbe International Airport, signaling ongoing efforts to bring back those associated with the LRA.

These returns highlight a broader trend of defections and repatriations linked to the dwindling influence of the LRA, a rebel group Kony founded in the 1980s. While his family’s return might offer clues about his current status, his exact whereabouts remain unknown, with speculation pointing to the Central African Republic. The repatriation underscores Uganda’s continued efforts to address the legacy of the LRA’s decades-long campaign of violence in the region.
