In a landmark political move, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). This agreement aims to foster national unity, stability, and good governance, setting aside political differences to address Kenya’s long-standing socio-economic challenges.

Addressing Kenya’s Longstanding Challenges

Raila Odinga acknowledged that many of Kenya’s struggles are as old as the country itself. According to him, mutual trust, honest leadership, and a conducive environment are crucial for tackling these deep-rooted issues. Through this MoU, ODM and UDA have committed to working together beyond party lines to prioritize the nation’s progress over political rivalry

Key Commitments in the MoU

In his statement, Raila Odinga outlined several commitments made by both parties:

Regular consultations on national issues to foster informed decision-making.Exchange of governance expertise to improve leadership and best practices.

Active participation in public engagements that focus on addressing citizens’ problems.

By collaborating, ODM and UDA aim to establish a broad-based governance approach that includes all Kenyans, regardless of political affiliation or region.

Raila Odinga clarified that the MoU does not create a political coalition between ODM and UDA. However, he emphasized that its successful implementation could lay the foundation for a broader, progressive political formation in the future, aimed at fostering long-term national stability.

Strengthening Devolution and Institutional Reforms

A key priority in the MoU is strengthening devolution to ensure equitable resource distribution across counties. Raila Odinga announced a proposal to allocate no less than Ksh450 billion to counties in the 2025/26 financial year, ensuring that local governments have the resources needed for development.

Additionally, ODM and UDA have pledged to:

Ensure the faithful flow of funds to political parties, allowing them to effectively represent citizens’ interests. Revisit key constitutional provisions relating to leadership, integrity, corruption, public service efficiency, and the rule of law. Protect fundamental freedoms, including free speech, the right to protest, and democratic governance

Raila Odinga’s Call for National Unity

In his concluding remarks, Raila Odinga urged all Kenyans who desire a stable, inclusive, and prosperous nation to rally behind this initiative. He stressed the need to move beyond political grandstanding and regional alienation to build a united and progressive country. This agreement signals a potential shift in Kenya’s political landscape, where collaboration replaces division, and national interests take precedence over personal or party ambitions. As ODM and UDA move forward with implementing the MoU, all eyes will be on Raila Odinga’s leadership and the impact of this bold step on Kenya’s future.
