Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah made history on March 21, 2025, as she was inaugurated Namibia’s first female president, coinciding with the nation’s 35th independence anniversary. Due to predicted heavy rainfall, the planned celebration at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium was relocated to the State House, where it was attended by African heads of state from Angola, South Africa, Tanzania and many others.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, made history as Namibia’s first female president after winning the November 2024 elections with 58% of the vote. Her inauguration ceremony was marked by loud applause and ululations as she took her oath of office. Outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba, 83, handed over power to Nandi-Ndaitwah, describing the moment as a breakthrough for Namibia’s “foremost daughters.”

In her inaugural speech, Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged the significance of her election but emphasized that Namibians chose her for her competence and merit. She highlighted the progress made since independence but stressed that much work remains to be done. Key priorities for her administration include tackling corruption, youth development, women’s empowerment, and sports development.

A Call for Unity and Job Creation

President Nandi-Ndaitwah addressed the pressing issue of unemployment, particularly among the youth, with 44% of 18- to 34-year-olds jobless in 2023. She pledged to create 500,000 jobs over the next five years, focusing on sectors such as agriculture, fishing, and the creative and sports industries. This ambitious plan will require an investment of 85 billion Namibian dollars ($4.67 billion).

She also called for unity following the divisive elections, urging Namibians to come together and build the nation. The opposition party, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), had mounted a strong challenge but secured only 25.5% of the presidential vote, reflecting continued loyalty to the ruling SWAPO party.

Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila Elected as Speaker of the National Assembly

In another historic move, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was elected as the first female Speaker of the National Assembly on 20 March 2025. She secured 55 out of 95 votes, replacing outgoing Speaker Peter Katjavivi, who is retiring. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s election marks another milestone for women in Namibian politics, further solidifying the country’s commitment to gender equality.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration faces significant challenges, including unemployment, corruption, and political divisions. However, her focus on youth development, women’s empowerment, and job creation offers hope for a brighter future.
