Nairobi, Kenya — On August 3, 2025, Kenya’s Harambee Stars launched their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a thrilling 1-0 victory against defending champions DR Congo at a sold-out Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The historic win, witnessed by President William Ruto among the ecstatic home crowd, marked a memorable debut for Kenya in the continental tournament.

The Defining Moment

In the final moments of first-half stoppage time (45th Minute), Austine Odhiambo broke the deadlock with a powerful strike, capitalizing on a rebound from Paul Were’s shot. The goal sent the packed stadium into a frenzy, with thousands of fans, including President Ruto, celebrating the defining moment of Kenya’s breakthrough performance.

So, How Was the Atmosphere at the Match

The atmosphere at Kasarani was electric as Kenya faced a formidable DR Congo side, two-time CHAN champions in 2009 and 2016. Despite the Leopards’ early possession and pressure, the Harambee Stars remained disciplined and compact. The presence of President Ruto added to the occasion’s significance, amplifying the crowd’s energy as they rallied behind the home team.

Kenya’s resolute defending thwarted DR Congo’s attacking efforts throughout the first half. The breakthrough came from sustained pressure in the box, with Odhiambo’s clinical finish proving decisive. The second half saw both teams create opportunities, but Kenya’s defense stood firm to secure a clean sheet and a landmark victory.
