Kenya has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Prime Minister and opposition leader Raila Odinga, a towering figure in the country’s political landscape for over four decades. President William Ruto has declared seven days of national mourning in honour of the late statesman, marking one of the most solemn moments in the nation’s history.

In a statement released from State House Nairobi on Wednesday, President Ruto described Raila Odinga as “a patriot who dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy, justice, and national unity.” The Head of State directed that flags be flown at half-mast across all public buildings and Kenyan missions abroad for the entire mourning period.“The Republic of Kenya has lost a true son of the soil. In his passing, we honour a man who shaped our nation’s democratic journey with unmatched courage and resilience,” President Ruto said.

The Loss of a Political Giant: Remembering Raila Odinga

Raila Odinga, 80, passed away on Wednesday morning at the Nairobi Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a short illness. His family confirmed his death in a brief statement, expressing deep sorrow and gratitude for the nation’s outpouring of love and support.

Odinga served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, under the Grand Coalition Government formed after the 2007–2008 post-election crisis. Known affectionately as “Baba” by his supporters, he was a relentless advocate for democracy and reform, leading multiple political movements and contesting five presidential elections.

State Funeral and National Tributes

The government has announced plans for a state funeral, with details to be released by a national funeral committee chaired by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Several memorial services are expected to be held across the country, culminating in a state burial at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Leaders from across the political divide and beyond Kenya’s borders have sent their condolences. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta described Odinga as “a visionary leader whose voice for the voiceless inspired generations.” Messages of sympathy have also poured in from the African Union, the United Nations, and several heads of state.
