King Charles III was crowned King of England in a coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 6th May 2023. This marked the first such event in the United Kingdom in 70 years. During the ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury placed the St Edward’s Crown on King Charles’s head. The crown was made for King Charles II in the 17th century and is only worn during the monarch’s coronation. This means King Charles III will not wear it again. Following the King’s coronation, his wife Camilla also received a crown as Queen. The two then returned to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.

What was the theme during the coronation of King Charles?

The theme of the ceremony was the importance of service, which was reflected in the oaths and prayers King Charles made. The theme also showed up in the sermon delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The King made a prayer saying “I come not to be served, but to serve.” The Archbishop opened his sermon with the statement: “We are here to crown a King, and we crown a King to serve.”

Will Prince Charles be loyal to King Charles?

During the ceremony, Charles was proclaimed as the “undoubted King”. Members of the congregation were asked to show their homage and service by shouting “God Save the King”. There were also moments of silence as each stage of the ancient ceremony finished. Prince William made a pledge of loyalty to King Charles, and members of the congregation were invited to offer their own support.

Who watched the coronation?

The crowning moment was watched by crowds in Northern Ireland and gun salutes were made at 13 locations across the UK. These included London, Edinburgh, and Hillsborough. The bells of Westminster Abbey rang for two minutes, and the crowd on The Mall broke out in a chant of “God Save the King”. Meanwhile, the sound of popped corks could be heard.

How many people attended the ceremony?

About 2,300 people attended the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey, including Prince Harry and his cousins. Celebrity guests like Emma Thompson and Katy Perry were also present, as well as US First Lady Jill Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, among others.

When did Charles become King of the United Kingdom?

Charles became King of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms in September, following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, who had reigned for 70 years. Months of planning went into the coronation celebrations, the 40th to take place at Westminster Abbey since 1066. The service was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.
