On Monday, February 24, 2025, tragedy struck the football community in Uganda with the untimely death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian forward playing for Vipers SC, one of the country’s most prominent football clubs. Lawal lost his life in a devastating motorcycle accident along Entebbe Road in Kampala, a busy route connecting the city to Entebbe International Airport. The incident occurred in the morning, reportedly as he was traveling to Kitende Stadium to participate in a training session with his team.

When Did Abubakar Lawal Join Vipers FC?

Abubakar Lawal had been a key figure at Vipers SC since joining the club in 2022 from AS Kigali, a Rwandan side. Over nearly three years with the Ugandan giants, he made a significant impact on the pitch, known for his skillful play and memorable performances, including scoring crucial goals in competitions like the CAF Champions League. His talent, paired with his warm personality and infectious smile, endeared him to teammates, fans, and the broader football fraternity.

SAD NEWS! We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

However, reports indicate that the accident involved a motorcycle, a common mode of transport in Kampala known locally as “boda boda.”
