For a long time, Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote held the title of Africa’s richest man. Recently, South Africa’s Johann Rupert surpassed him to become the wealthiest person on the continent, showing that indeed “no condition is permanent.” However, this time, the tide has turned once again. As of September 10, 2024, Dangote has reclaimed his position as Africa’s richest man, overtaking Rupert. This mirrors past events such as Jeff Bezos overtaking Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world.

To some, the fluctuation between these two names may seem surprising. However, after Dangote’s resurgence, his name is now firmly back in the spotlight. These are names not to be forgotten—names that many people will continue to look up to for inspiration and motivation.

Aliko Dangote’s status as Africa’s richest man was reaffirmed by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as of September 10, 2024. His net worth now stands at $13.1 billion, slightly edging out Johann Rupert, whose net worth has declined to $13 billion, placing him at the 163 position globally among the world’s richest people.

Dangote’s resurgence to the top is attributed to a recovery in the value of his salt factories and flour mills and a major rise in the imports such rice, fish, pasta, cement, and fertilizer. combined with an improvement in Nigeria’s economic conditions. Meanwhile, Rupert’s wealth has seen a slight dip due to a downturn in the luxury goods market affecting his Swiss-based conglomerate, Richemont.
