What has happened to the ASFAs 2025?

KAMPALA, Uganda – The African fashion scene is abuzz with excitement following the official launch of the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs 2025). This marks a triumphant return after a two-year hiatus. Held at the chic Noni Vie venue in Kampala on August 5, 2025, the event drew a curated crowd of fashion insiders, influencers, designers, and media personalities, all eager to glimpse what promises to be the most transformative edition yet.

At the heart of this year’s awards is the provocative theme: “The Fashivists.” Coined by ASFAs founder and renowned fashion entrepreneur Brian Ahumuza, popularly known as Abryanz, the term encapsulates a “revolutionary tribe of style visionaries, trendsetters, and cultural disruptors who are not only redefining fashion but are also using it as a tool to inspire, challenge norms, and amplify African excellence on the global stage.”

Abryanz elaborated during his keynote, stating, “This year, we go beyond glamour. We are honoring those who don’t just wear fashion – they live it, speak it, and use it to challenge the status quo. The Fashivist is a movement, a mindset, and at ASFAs 2025, we celebrate the fearless, the bold, and the unapologetically stylish.”

The theme draws inspiration from the iconic words of Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti – “Fashion is the weapon of the future” – positioning fashion not merely as aesthetic expression but as a powerful vehicle for activism. Fashivists, as described, are individuals who wield style to address pressing issues like African identity, gender norms, inequality, mental health, and sustainability, turning runways into platforms for social change.

A Storied Legacy in African Fashion

The ASFAs, often hailed as “Africa’s biggest fashion night,” were established in 2013 by Brian Ahumuza in Kampala, Uganda. Born on November 1, 1990, in Masindi, Uganda, Ahumuza – a self-made fashion designer, stylist, and brand influencer – began his journey with a small shop at Prime Complex in Kampala’s city center. His eponymous brand, Abryanz Collection, quickly gained traction, leading to the creation of the awards as a platform to celebrate and elevate African fashion talent.

Over the years, the ASFAs have grown into an annual cornerstone of the continent’s creative calendar, honoring style icons, designers, and entrepreneurs through glamorous red-carpet events and awards ceremonies. Past editions have featured themes like “The Awakening” in 2022, which focused on rebirth and innovation in post-pandemic fashion. The awards have spotlighted emerging and established talents, fostering collaborations and putting Ugandan and African fashion on the global map. Ahumuza’s influence extends beyond the runway; he has been featured on CNN’s African Voices and has championed men’s fashion in a region where it was once underrepresented.

The two-year break since the last event in 2022 allowed for reflection and reinvention, culminating in this year’s highly anticipated comeback. “The hiatus was necessary to evolve,” Ahumuza noted in recent interviews, emphasizing the need to align the awards with contemporary cultural shifts.

What’s Ahead: Calendar, Nominations, and More

When are the ASFAs 2025? You ask! The launch also unveiled an ambitious calendar of events designed to build momentum across the continent leading up to the grand finale on December 12, 2025, at the Kampala Serena Hotel, starting at 5 PM EAT. Highlights include industry panels discussing fashion’s role in activism, exclusive fashion showcases, regional tours to engage communities beyond Uganda, and pop-up activations to spotlight emerging designers. A key addition is the ASFA Fashion Week, officially launched as part of the buildup.

Nominations for ASFAs 2025 are now officially open, inviting the public, fashion stakeholders, and enthusiasts across Africa to submit names of the continent’s most impactful style icons, creatives, and entrepreneurs. A call-out for designers is also live, encouraging submissions that embody the Fashivist spirit. Submissions can be made via the official website, where a detailed press release outlines the process.

For die-hard fans, early bird “Die Hard” tickets are available throughout August 2025 at UGX 150,000 for the first 100 purchasers, securing premium seats at what is expected to be a sold-out, star-studded affair. Partnerships, such as with Adris Digital Africa as the official organizational partner, underscore the event’s growing ecosystem.

The Broader Impact on African Fashion

In a continent where fashion is increasingly intertwined with cultural and social narratives, the ASFAs 2025 theme arrives at a pivotal moment. By celebrating “Fashivists,” the awards aim to amplify voices that use style as resistance and advocacy, potentially influencing global perceptions of African creativity. As Ahumuza puts it, this edition is about more than awards – it’s a movement to “position fashion as a tool for cultural activism, identity, and storytelling.”

Fashion enthusiasts can follow updates on social media via @asfawards on X, Instagram, and Facebook, or visit the official website for more details. With nominations underway and the calendar in motion, ASFAs 2025 is poised to redefine the intersection of style and substance in African fashion.
