Residents of Mbita are grappling with shock and anxiety after fishermen recovered 20 live bombs from the waters of Lake Victoria in two separate incidents over the weekend.

The discoveries, made on March 1 and March 2, 2026, occurred at different beaches within Homa Bay County, prompting swift intervention from security agencies and raising fresh concerns over safety in the region.

How Did a Routine Fishing Trip End in the Shocking Recovery of 20 Live Bombs?

The first incident unfolded on March 1 at Litare Beach. According to witnesses, a group of fishermen had cast their nets as usual when they pulled out a heavy metallic box. At first, they believed they had landed an unusually large catch.

Their excitement quickly turned into alarm when they opened the container and found it packed with what appeared to be live explosives and ammunition. Realising the potential danger, the fishermen immediately moved away from the box and notified local authorities.

Security officers arrived at the scene shortly after, secured the area and safely removed the explosives for further handling.

What Happened at Koguna Beach the Following Day?

Less than 24 hours later, another group of fishermen made a similar discovery at Koguna Beach. This time, 14 more live bombs were retrieved from the lake.

Police responded promptly and collected the devices, which were later taken to the local police station as investigations began into how the explosives ended up in the lake.

Why Are Residents Raising Security Concerns?

The back-to-back incidents have unsettled residents and fishermen who depend on the lake for their livelihoods. Many are now questioning the source of the explosives and whether more could still be submerged in the water.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that measures are being taken to ensure safety along the lakeshore. Bomb disposal experts are expected to handle the safe destruction of the recovered devices.

No injuries were reported in either incident, but the discoveries have left the lakeside community shaken and calling for tighter security surveillance around the area.
