How many students are on the Makerere Admission List 2025?

Makerere University has admitted 1,732 students on government sponsorship for the 2025/2026 academic year, securing the largest share of the 4,000 slots allocated annually to public universities across Uganda, this publication has learnt.

The government’s National Merit sponsorship scheme supports at least 4,000 students each year in various public institutions, with Makerere University consistently taking the lion’s share. The remaining 2,268 slots for the upcoming academic year will be distributed among other public universities, including Gulu University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Busitema University, Kabale University, Kyambogo University, Lira University, Muni University, and Soroti University.

Prof. Buyinza Mukasi, the Academic Registrar at Makerere University, revealed that the institution has received an increased number of government-sponsored slots this year compared to the previous academic year. “We are pleased to accommodate more students under the government sponsorship scheme, enabling access to quality education for deserving candidates,” he said.

Key Programs and Cut-Off Points for Admission List

For STEM programs, the cut-off points reflect the competitive nature of admissions. For instance, the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (CIV) at Makerere’s main campus requires a minimum of 52.8 points for female applicants and 52.1 for all applicants, while the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MAM) has cut-offs of 52.0 and 49.4, respectively. The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering (AGE) sets thresholds at 49.8 for females and 46.1 overall, and the Bachelor of Pharmacy (PHA) requires 49.8 and 48.1 points, respectively.

Non-STEM programs also maintain high standards. The Bachelor of Business Administration (ADM) at Makerere has a cut-off of 48.4 points, while the same program at MUBS (BBD) requires 46.5 points. The Bachelor of Applied Psychology (APS) demands 51.6 points, and the Bachelor of Procurement and Supply Chain Management (PSM) at MUBS sets a cut-off of 52.0 points. Notably, the Bachelor of Arts with Education offers varied cut-offs depending on the subject combination, ranging from 38.8 for German (EDA-GER) to 52.3 for Kiswahili (EDA-KIS).

Some programs, such as the Bachelor of Laws (LAW), did not specify cut-off points in the published list, indicating a unique selection process, possibly involving additional criteria like pre-entry examinations.

Diverse Academic Offerings

The admission list covers 73 programs, showcasing Makerere’s extensive academic portfolio. Students can pursue cutting-edge fields like the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSW, 50.9/49.3), Biomedical Engineering (BBI, 50.8/49.2), and Petroleum Geoscience and Production (BPG, 51.7/47.5). Others may opt for specialized programs such as the Bachelor of Cytotechnology (BYT, 47.5/46.1), Bachelor of Optometry (BPT, 50.8/46.5), or Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy (BSL, 44.3/43.3).

For those inclined toward business and management, options include the Bachelor of International Business (BIB, 51.9), Bachelor of Entrepreneurship (BEN, 51.8), and Bachelor of Leisure Events and Hospitality Management (BLM, 51.6), all offered at MUBS. Creative and interdisciplinary programs like the Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA, 41.4) and Bachelor of Visual Communication, Design and Multimedia (BVC, 44.0) also attract students with diverse interests.

Bridging Access to Higher Education

The government sponsorship scheme remains a critical avenue for enabling talented students from varied backgrounds to access higher education. Makerere’s allocation of 1,732 slots underscores its pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s academic and professional landscape. The increased slots this year signal a positive step toward expanding opportunities, particularly for students pursuing competitive STEM disciplines.

As admitted students prepare to join Makerere University, the institution continues to uphold its reputation as a beacon of academic excellence. The distribution of the remaining slots across other public universities ensures that the benefits of government sponsorship reach students nationwide, fostering a new generation of skilled professionals across diverse fields.
