In the late kick-off Monday night Football match against Liverpool, Manchester United managed to get their first win of the season. The game that ended 2-1 in favour of United saw the Red Devils play with such intensity and commitment like never before. It’s like their life depended on it.
Going into the game, a number of Football fans had nothing much to expect from United. The later had lost their previous two games .One against Brighton and Hove Albion and the other against Brentford. Technically , history was bound to repeat itself.Unfirtunately,it didn’t .
How Manchester United Stunned Liverpool
To be precise the whole thing must have started right from the Coach’s call .Who to start the game and who to be on bench. Eye-brows were raised when Erik Ten hag named Captain Maguire, Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo on bench .
However,as it later turned out, all those who started in place of the trip did absolutely a great job.Tyrell Malacia who started in Shaw’s place did a good job tailing Liverpool’s Talisman Mo Salah.Varane seemed to do all the right things that always give Maguire headache.
Anthony Elanga,the surprise starter gave an assist for United’s opening goal. Having squandered a chance to score just after 10 minutes into the game,Elanga had a nice exchange between him and Christian Eriksen.This led to the ball falling England winger Jadon Sancho.
With all the calmness one can imagine, Sancho switched the ball from his right to the left football, allowing Liverpool’s James Milner to dive like a sack of potatoes before scoring on the 16 minute to make it 1-0.
United seemed and was indeed the better side , causing Liverpool all kind of problems humanely possible. Its no wonder just eight minutes into the second half France Forward Anthony Martial who had been brought in as a substitute released Marcus Rashford on the counter.
Rashford was released by Martial behind Alexander-Arnold only to face Liverpool Goalkeeper Alison Becker one-one . The ball was slotted inside the near post by Rashford to make it 2-0 at the 53 minute.
A couple of substitutes made by Liverpool threatened to make the blissful night at Old Trafford unpleasant. Nineteen year Liverpool Substitute Fabio Carvalho struck a fierce shot forcing a rebound from David de Gea.Mohamed Salah pounced on the opportunity to nod home making the score 2-1 at 81.
As a result, the remaining 10 or so minutes so Liverpool pushing on for an equaliser. United’s backline that has been known for being shaky held on till the final whistle gifting Erik Ten Hag his first United Victory. With the final game of Game Week three done , United currently sit 14th on the table whereas Liverpool are 16th.
