Singer Nina Roz, real name Nina Kakunda, has publicly showered legendary deejay DJ Shiru with praises for the unwavering support he has given her music career. In a heartwarming expression of gratitude, the “Ugandan Property” emphasized how DJ Shiru has stood by her since her early days in the industry.
“Shiru knew me even before I started doing music. I was still hiding behind other people, but I’m glad that I have made a friend in him. He has made me who I am because he is the kind of person who doesn’t front money, something that is hard to find in our music industry,” she said.
Nina Roz highlighted a common challenge in the Ugandan music scene where deejays often demand payments or compensation from artists in exchange for playing their songs. Shiru, however, stood out as a rare figure, offering his support selflessly. According to Nina, there was never a moment when DJ Shiru asked her for payments or favors—a gesture she deeply values in an industry where such actions are uncommon.
“You will find an upcoming deejay who is new in the game also asking an artist to pay money before they can play their music. I thank Shiru for having a good heart because he never collected any single coin from me or even disrespected me or my talent for not paying him,” she noted.
Over the weekend, DJ Shiru held his annual ‘Mega Shirumatic Experience,’ and Nina Roz was there to show her support. As one of the few artists who actively promoted the event and made an appearance at the press conference, her presence was a testament to the strong friendship and mutual respect between them.
“I thank him for respecting himself. That is why I also give him that much respect to the point that I will run as fast as I can when he calls me,” she stated.
Nina Roz also touched on the harsh reality that some deejays and industry professionals, such as producers or managers, often expect favors beyond just financial compensation. She encouraged fellow artists, particularly those who are just starting out, to stay true to their values and never compromise their artistry for the sake of gaining support.
“There are those that kept on asking for money and more, but I had to know what I wanted and stick to that. You just have to be alert as an artist because at the end of the day, they are human and not related to you,” she advised.
