Ugandans across the country experienced major internet disruptions today after the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) ordered a temporary shutdown of public internet access in uganda and selected mobile services.
In a directive dated 13th January 2026, UCC instructed all licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to suspend key services starting 6:00 pm today. The move follows a recommendation from the Inter-Agency Security Committee ahead of the national election period.
According to the UCC letter, the suspended services include:
- Public internet access
- Sale and registration of new SIM cards
- Outbound data roaming to One Network Area (ONA) countries
UCC said the decision was taken to prevent the spread of misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud, and online incitement, which could threaten public safety and national security during the elections.
The shutdown affects all major forms of internet access, including mobile data, fiber, fixed wireless, satellite, microwave radio links, and leased lines. Services such as social media, web browsing, email, video streaming, and messaging apps are also blocked for the public.

However, UCC has allowed limited access for essential services needed for national security, network management, and critical operations. These systems will only be available to authorized users through secured and whitelisted connections.
The internet blackout will remain in place until UCC issues a restoration notice.
As of now, millions of Ugandans are offline, with businesses, media, and the public waiting for updates on when services will be fully restored.
