The football community in Uganda and beyond on February 27, 2025 paused to mourn the loss of Abubakar Lawal, a talented Nigerian striker for Vipers SC, whose life was tragically cut short. Lawal, a beloved figure both on and off the pitch, passed away following a devastating fall from a shopping mall balcony in Kampala, as reported by the Uganda Police Force after investigation on February 24, 2025. In response, Vipers Sports Club has organized a heartfelt memorial ceremony to celebrate his life and legacy, ensuring his memory endures among teammates, fans, and the wider community

When Did Vipers SC Announce the Dhua Prayer for Abubakar Lawal?

The club announced the event via a post on X (formerly Twitter), inviting all to join in a Dhua, a traditional prayer ceremony at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, the home ground of the Ugandan Premier League side. This gathering will serve as a final tribute to Lawal, whose body will be honored before its journey back to his hometown of Sokoto, Nigeria, where he will be laid to rest. The ceremony promises to be a moment of unity, reflection, and gratitude for a young man who left an indelible mark in his short time with the club.

Abubakar Lawal was more than just a footballer. To his teammates and supporters, he was a source of inspiration—a player whose passion for the game was matched only by his warmth and kindness. Vipers SC, in their tribute, described him as a “true Venom,” embodying the spirit of the club both in his skillful play and his gentle demeanor. Local media echoed this sentiment, noting how Lawal’s presence brought joy to those around him, whether he was scoring goals or sharing a quiet moment with friends.

The circumstances of his passing have left many in shock. The incident at the Kampala shopping mall, a bustling hub in Uganda’s capital, serves as a somber reminder of life’s fragility. Yet, in the face of this tragedy, Vipers SC has chosen to focus on celebration rather than despair, channeling their grief into a fitting farewell that honors Lawal’s contributions and character.

St. Mary’s Stadium, nestled in Kitende, will transform into a place of reverence this afternoon as fans, players, and officials gather to pay their respects. The Dhua ceremony, rooted in Islamic tradition, will offer prayers for Lawal’s soul, a gesture that reflects his heritage and the club’s commitment to honoring his identity. For those unable to attend, the event stands as a symbol of solidarity, with the Vipers community extending its condolences to Lawal’s family in Nigeria and all who knew him.
