Kampala, Uganda: Rising Ugandan singer Vyroota, real name Musigazi Abdulaziz, has been arrested on allegations of procuring an abortion. The 20-year-old artist was detained alongside his manager, Walugembe, as police investigate claims of coercion and negligence.

What did Vyroota really do?

Reports suggest that Vyroota impregnated a young woman but allegedly refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest in an interview with Sanyuka Television on Thursday.

“Instead of supporting the girl, the singer and his manager pressured her into seeking an abortion, which caused great emotional distress to her and her family,” Onyango revealed.

The police are holding both Vyroota and his manager as investigations progress.

Is abortion illegal in Uganda?

Abortion in Uganda is heavily regulated. According to Article 22(2) of the Ugandan Constitution, the termination of an unborn child’s life is prohibited unless legally authorized. The Penal Code of 1950 further criminalizes unlawful abortion under the following provisions:

  • Section 141: Procuring an abortion is a felony punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
  • Section 142: Attempting to procure an unlawful abortion carries a seven-year prison sentence.
  • Section 143: Assisting in performing an abortion is punishable by up to three years in prison.

These stringent laws emphasize the Ugandan government’s stance on protecting the lives of unborn children.

Who is Vyroota?

Vyroota, born Musigazi Abdulaziz, is a fast-rising singer in Uganda’s music industry, best known for his fusion of Afrobeat and dancehall sounds. At just 20 years old, he gained recognition for tracks like “Nkwagala” and “Muziki Love”, which earned him a growing fan base.

The young artist’s rise to fame has been fueled by his catchy tunes and energetic stage performances. Despite his promising career, Vyroota has been at the center of controversy, with critics accusing him of being reckless offstage.

This latest incident has raised questions about the responsibility and behavior of public figures, especially those with influence over Uganda’s youth.
