WhatsApp Messenger Unveils New Instagram Link Feature for 2025

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, has introduced a feature that allows users to link their Instagram profiles directly to their WhatsApp accounts. This update on WhatsApp messenger, enhances the integration between two of Meta’s flagship platforms, aims to create a more seamless and connected experience for users across its ecosystem. While the feature is still rolling out and may not be available to all users yet, it marks a significant step in bridging the gap between WhatsApp’s messaging capabilities and Instagram’s visual storytelling.

How to Add an Instagram Link to WhatsApp Messenger

The ability to add Instagram links to WhatsApp profiles is designed to make it easier for people to share their social media presence with contacts. Once enabled, users can add their Instagram profile link in the “Links” section of their WhatsApp account settings, typically found under Settings > Profile > Links. The linked Instagram handle then appears prominently on the user’s WhatsApp profile, often below their profile picture and name, making it visible to others based on customizable privacy settings. Users can choose who sees this link—options include “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” “My Contacts Except,” or “Nobody”—mirroring WhatsApp’s existing privacy controls for profile details.

This integration is optional, meaning users who prefer to keep their WhatsApp and Instagram accounts separate are not required to link them. For those who opt in, the feature offers a convenient way to direct friends, family, or even business contacts to their Instagram content without manually sharing URLs in chats. For example, a small business owner could use this to drive traffic from WhatsApp to their Instagram page, where they showcase products or services, while an individual might use it to share personal updates or creative projects with their network.

How Was This New Feature Discovered On WhatsApp Messenger?

The feature was first spotted in beta testing for iOS users (version 25.7.10.70, as reported by WABetaInfo) and has since been noted in Android beta versions as well, suggesting a broader rollout is imminent. While currently limited to Instagram, there’s speculation that WhatsApp might expand this functionality to include other platforms, such as Facebook or even non-Meta services like Twitter (X) or link aggregators, based on hints found in the app’s code. This could transform WhatsApp profiles into digital business cards, especially for users looking to promote their online presence.

Will an Authentication Security Measure Be Implemented?

For businesses, this update builds on existing tools available in WhatsApp Business, where verified accounts can already display social media links after authentication. The extension to personal accounts, however, democratizes this capability, though it’s unclear if WhatsApp Messenger will eventually require authentication for personal links to prevent misuse like impersonation. Privacy remains a focus, with the ability to hide links from specific contacts or the public, ensuring users retain control over their information.

The timing of this feature aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to integrate its platforms—WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook—more tightly. By linking these services, Meta encourages users to stay within its ecosystem, potentially boosting engagement across all three apps. As of March 31, 2025, the feature is still in its early stages, primarily available to beta testers, but it’s expected to reach all users in the coming weeks or months, depending on regional updates and testing feedback.

In practice, adding an Instagram link is straightforward: users generate a standard Instagram profile URL (e.g., instagram.com/username) and input it into WhatsApp’s designated field. Once saved, it becomes clickable for viewers with the appropriate permissions, directing them to the Instagram app or browser. This eliminates the need to copy and paste links manually, streamlining cross-platform sharing.

While the feature enhances connectivity, it’s worth noting that its utility depends on both parties having the respective apps installed—clicking an Instagram link from WhatsApp won’t work seamlessly if Instagram isn’t on the recipient’s device. Nonetheless, for the millions of users active on both platforms, this update offers a small but meaningful way to unify their digital identities. Whether for personal networking or business promotion, WhatsApp’s embrace of Instagram links reflects the evolving role of messaging apps as hubs for broader social interaction.
