When did Shaka Ssali pass away?

Veteran VOA journalist and former host of Straight Talk Africa, Shaka Ssali, has passed away today 27 March 2025. Reports indicate that the self-proclaimed “Kabale Kid” died on Thursday evening, marking the end of an era for African journalism.

VOA Journalist Shaka Ssali Is Dead

Ssali was a household name in media circles, having led Straight Talk Africa, Voice of America’s flagship weekly program, for over two decades before his retirement in 2021. His work provided a platform for in-depth discussions on African politics, governance, and social issues, earning him a loyal following across the continent and beyond.

In recognition of his immense contribution to journalism, Ssali was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) during their annual convention in September 2024. The award celebrated his unwavering commitment to telling African stories and amplifying voices that often went unheard in mainstream media.

The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the media industry and beyond. Among the many paying tribute to him was Mr. Roland Muhinda, one of his admirers, who described him as “a straight-talking journalist who fairly, and without bias, gave Africa’s opposition and liberation movements a voice on the world stage.”
