Tororo District Scouts converged at Elgon View Sports Ground for the annual Tororo District Scouts Camp. A total of seven schools participated, forming 11 Patrols/Units — six from the primary section and five from the secondary section — with 109 Scouts in attendance. The reporting day was Wednesday, 30th July 2025, and the camp ended on Saturday, 2nd August 2025.

Unlike the previous year, this edition saw a rise in the number of units present. It should be noted that Tororo District Scouts are rejuvenating the scouting movement after several years of almost no activity. This resurgence raised eyebrows, especially due to the absence of previously consistent participants like Rock High School. Among the schools present, only St. Peter’s College Tororo has consistently attended all the recent camps.

Unlike the previous year, this edition saw a rise in the number of units present.

The secondary schools present were: St. Peter’s College Tororo, which presented two teams: Venture Scouts and Junior Scout , Rubongi Army SS Tororo and Asinge SS, which had both boys’ and girls’ teams5. The primary schools included: Rock View School (boys and girls) , Magola Primary School (boys and girls) and St. Agnes Primary School Mella. (boys and girls).Elgon View School also had students in attendance, though they came as trainees and not as campers. Former Scouts particularly from Rock High School in the 2013-2015 era such as Mutamba Oscar , also passed by to wish the young scouts well.

Tororo District Scouts Camp: The Competition for Nationals

For starters, the Tororo District Scouts Camp is not just for fun — it also serves as a competition to determine the top three schools that will represent Tororo District at the upcoming National Scouts Camp at Kaazi Grounds in Wakiso organized by the Uganda Scouts Association from 22nd to 28th August 2025.

Assessment areas during inspection included: Team Spirit , Smartness, Uniformity, Content, Patrol Gears and Hygiene among others. Watch Asinge SS Boys receiving the Assesor for inspection.

In addition, scouts were given projects and bases — tasks that tested their intellectual and practical abilities. Points earned from inspections, projects, and bases determined their final rankings. The top three schools from these rankings qualified for nationals.

Last year (2024), Kisoko High School qualified for nationals. Rock View and St. Peter’s College Tororo had shown interest but failed to make it due to unforeseen circumstances.

The closing ceremony, where the winners were announced, took place on Saturday, 2nd August 2025. The day began with the usual morning roadwork, clean-up, and flag-breaking. Afterwards, a brass band led the Scouts in a march across Tororo town:

From Elgon View Sports Ground, they moved via Uhuru Drive to the Roundabout, down Nagongera Road, branching at Market Street, joining Mbale Road, passing Bazaar Street, and returning via Tororo Municipal Gardens back to Uhuru Drive.

Mr. Okiror Francis, Vice Chairperson, emphasized the need for scouts to practice a “good turn” — voluntary acts such as cleaning hospitals, helping the needy, and community service. He encouraged shy scouts to be more assertive and active.

Chief Guest, Ms. Nyadoi Topista, Principal Inspector of Schools and Chairperson of Tororo District Scouts Council, delivered apologies from the RDC, who was unable to attend. She appreciated the positive change in scout behavior and reminded them that they are the light of their communities.
