Monday, April 28, 2025 — Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omala, a prominent figure in Uganda’s law enforcement history, has died after a long battle with cancer. He passed away at 7 AM at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for prostate cancer and kidney complications.
Who was Sam Omala?
Born in 1961, Omala served in the Uganda Police Force for several decades, earning a reputation as a decisive and tough officer. He became widely known during the 2011 “Walk-to-Work” protests, where he led operations as the Kampala North Police Operations Commander. His firm stance in managing the demonstrations, spearheaded by opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, drew both praise and criticism from various sections of the public.

Career After Retirement
In 2020, Omala retired from the police upon reaching the mandatory retirement age. In August 2023, he joined the private security sector, taking up the role of Deputy CEO of Operations at Arrow Security Systems Limited, a private firm owned by Captain Mike Mukula. In this role, he applied his extensive experience to strengthening the company’s operations.
Declining Health of Sam Omalla
In November 2024, while visiting Mombasa, Kenya, Omala’s health sharply deteriorated. He collapsed and was admitted to a hospital in Kilifi, where doctors diagnosed him with kidney failure alongside his existing prostate cancer. After stabilization, he requested to return home and was admitted to Mulago Hospital in Kampala. During his final days, Omala, unable to speak clearly, conveyed through his son, Mutukuvu Devine Omala, a heartfelt plea seeking forgiveness from anyone he may have wronged during his life and career.

At the age of 63, Sam Omala was a father to 16 children and grandfather to 39 grandchildren. His home was specially built with separate houses for his two wives within the same compound, reflecting his strong commitment to family and cultural values.
