The ceremony is expected to be one of Uganda’s biggest entertainment events of the year and will be broadcast live across major media platforms, allowing audiences across Africa to join in the celebration.
Where Will the Awards Be Held?
The prestigious event is expected to return to the Kampala Serena Hotel, a venue that has successfully hosted previous editions of the awards. Known for its elegant atmosphere and world-class facilities, the Serena Hotel continues to provide a fitting stage for one of Africa’s fastest-growing film and television award ceremonies.
What Is the Theme for the 2026 iKON Awards?
This year’s theme, “Beyond Borders,” reflects the awards’ transformation from a national celebration into a continental platform for African storytelling. The theme encourages collaboration among filmmakers across Africa by promoting co-productions, professional networking, knowledge exchange, and wider market opportunities. It also highlights the importance of removing barriers that have traditionally limited African cinema’s global reach.
Organizers have already taken this vision across the continent through the iKON Activate initiative, which has hosted programs in Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda, with the next activation scheduled for Johannesburg, South Africa, later this year.
When Will the iKON Awards 2026 Nominees Be Announced?
The full list of iKON Awards 2026 nominees has not yet been released. Organizers confirmed that the official nominations will be unveiled during the iKON Activate South Africa event, taking place from October 22 to 26, 2026, in Johannesburg. This year’s edition attracted a record-breaking 300 film submissions, with entries coming from Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and several other countries beyond the continent.
The awards will recognize excellence across numerous categories, including feature films, documentaries, short films, television productions, technical achievements, and special honors such as the iKON Rising Star Award, Fellow of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award.
Following previous editions that celebrated renowned figures including Nigerian screen legend Patience Ozokwor alongside Uganda’s finest filmmakers and actors, expectations are high for another competitive and diverse list of nominees.
More Than Just an Awards Ceremony
Founded by Humphrey Nabimanya under Reach A Hand Uganda in partnership with SautiPlus Media Hub, the iKON Awards have grown into much more than an annual awards gala. The initiative continues to invest in the future of African cinema through the iKON Young Filmmakers Fellowship, a mentorship program that equips emerging filmmakers with practical skills, industry guidance, and opportunities to produce original short films.
