Uganda’s hopes of a historic victory were dashed in heartbreaking fashion as Algeria came from behind to claim a dramatic 2–1 win in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday night.

The Uganda Cranes produced an inspiring first-half performance that saw Steven Mukwala fire them ahead early in the game, but two late goals from the hosts including a stoppage-time penalty turned the tide, leaving Uganda empty-handed despite a spirited display.

Uganda Take an Early Lead in the 6th Minute

Uganda started brightly and stunned the Algerian crowd in Tizi Ouzou with a quick-fire goal. Mukwala, sharp and determined, latched onto a well-timed pass before slotting calmly past the goalkeeper in the 6th minute.

The Cranes held their shape well throughout the first half, frustrating the Algerian attackers with disciplined defending and smart transitions. At halftime, Uganda led 1–0 and looked poised for a memorable result against one of Africa’s most formidable sides.

Algeria Rally Late Win

The momentum shifted after the break as Algeria increased their intensity, dominating possession and forcing Uganda onto the back foot. The pressure finally paid off in the 81st minute, when Mohamed Amoura finished clinically to draw the hosts level.

As the game wore on, Uganda’s resistance began to fade. Deep into added time, the referee awarded Algeria a penalty following a scrappy sequence inside the box in the 90+9 minutes. The hosts made no mistake from the spot, completing a thrilling comeback to the delight of the home fans.

For Uganda, it was a night of mixed emotions — pride in a strong performance overshadowed by disappointment at letting the lead slip away. The Cranes showed tactical maturity and fighting spirit, but lapses in the closing stages proved costly. Despite the loss, Uganda’s display offered encouraging signs for the matches ahead, with fans hopeful that such performances can be turned into results as the qualifiers progress
