KAMPALA, UGANDA — Intense panic and widespread anxiety swept across Uganda and Tooro Kingdom on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following unverified social media rumors claiming that the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, had passed away in the United States.
The rumors gained rapid traction after a online publication by news portal Chimp Reports (authored by journalist Godfrey Tugume) cited a source close to the royal family and reports from Babiito royal clan member Andrew Irumba Katusabe, claiming the 34-year-old monarch had succumbed to cancer in a US hospital.
However, Chimp Reports explicitly noted in their publication that they could not independently verify the circumstances surrounding the reported death, highlighting that neither Tooro Kingdom nor the Government of Uganda had issued an official death proclamation.

Addressing the public panic, Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara released a statement on his official X account, firmly rejecting claims that the king has passed away while confirming that the monarch remains under medical care abroad.
“Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV is still unwell and remains under medical management in the United States,” Minister Balaam stated, calling upon the nation and the people of Tooro to remain calm and join in prayer for the monarch.
What is the official statement from Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Office?
To provide clarity amidst escalating public concern, the Prime Minister Office of Tooro Kingdom released an official communication to the public regarding the health condition of the king.
The official statement from the kingdom administration confirmed that King Oyo is battling severe illness, asking the public for spiritual support:
OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION
From the Prime Ministers Office
To all the people of Tooro & the Public,
This is to inform you that King Oyo is currently in a critical condition.
At this difficult time, we humbly ask the people of Tooro & our friends to keep His Majesty in your prayers.
This official update marks a shift from early August 2026, when kingdom officials dismissed social media reports regarding the monarch health status. On August 3, Tooro Kingdom had issued a statement describing rumors of severe illness as false, assuring the public that King Oyo was in good health and traveling abroad for official engagements and further academic studies.
With the latest official communication confirming that King Oyo is in critical condition under medical management in the United States, cultural leaders and subjects across Fort Portal and the broader kingdom have rallied together in prayer.
Who is King Oyo of Tooro Kingdom?
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV is the reigning cultural leader of Tooro Kingdom, a traditional monarchy located in Western Uganda with its historic capital in Fort Portal City.
Born on April 16, 1992, Prince Oyo was born to the late Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
Following the sudden death of his father on August 26, 1995, Prince Oyo ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, at the age of just three years old. Upon his coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, he entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest reigning monarch in the world, succeeding King Mswati III of Eswatini who had previously held the title.
Because King Oyo ascended the throne as a toddler, a council of regents was appointed to manage kingdom administration and cultural affairs until he reached legal adulthood at age 18 in 2010. The regents included Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya, Prince James Desmond Mugenyi, and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Throughout his 31-year reign, King Oyo has championed economic development, youth empowerment, HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, environmental conservation across the Rwenzori region, and the preservation of Rutooro culture.
Where did King Oyo study and what are his academic qualifications?
Due to his unique position as a ruling monarch from early childhood, King Oyo pursued his education through specialized private institutions in Uganda and the United Kingdom:
- Early Childhood & Primary Education: In his formative years, King Oyo was home-schooled within the royal palace before attending preschool in London, United Kingdom. Upon returning to Uganda, he enrolled at Aga Khan Primary School in Kampala for his primary education.
- Secondary Education: For high school, King Oyo attended Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), where he focused on academics, arts, music, and sports.
- Higher Education: Following secondary school, King Oyo moved to the United Kingdom to pursue university studies. In October 2013, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Management from Winchester University in Hampshire, South East England.
In addition to his undergraduate degree, King Oyo has received honorary doctorate degrees and international recognitions for his global advocacy work, including serving as a UNAIDS Global Ambassador for youth HIV/AIDS awareness and a United Nations Global Peace Ambassador.
What happens next as Uganda awaits further official updates?
As news of the medical status of King Oyo continues to circulate, citizens across Uganda and traditional leaders within Tooro Kingdom are maintaining vigil while awaiting formal updates from the royal family.
Under cultural protocol, official declarations concerning the health, status, or well-being of the Omukama are strictly reserved for the senior leadership of the royal Babiito clan, the Omusuga (head of traditional rituals), and the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom.
For now, the government of Uganda and Tooro Kingdom administration continue to request that the public disregard unverified death reports, treat the royal family with respect, and focus on prayers for the recovery of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
